A remarkable, rare, early Abstract Expressionist etching by well known San Francisco Bay area artist, Roland Petersen. The print is unmounted and in excellent condition aside from some slight toning of the paper, a small line of foxing along the top edge and a small wrinkle, lower right border. The print is signed in pencil, lower right, "Roland Petersen", titled, "Sleeping Figure" and numbered, lower left, what appears to be 24/55, although it might be 24/35? The overall sheet measures, 12 1/2" 17 1/2".

Born in Denmark, Roland Petersen studied at the University of California in Berkeley, receiving a Masters degree in 1950. In the summers of 1950 and 1951 he studied painting at the Hans Hoffmann School of Fine Arts in Provincetown, Mass. with further study at the California School of Fine Arts in Oakland and the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. He also studied etching at the Stanley Hayter Altier in Paris in 1950, 1963 and 1971.

Petersen is best known for his richly colored, thickly painted interiors, cityscapes and genre, Abstract Expressionist paintings that have become highly sought after by collectors of Modernist, Expressionist paintings.
