A beautiful impressionist midwestern autumn landscape painting by listed Nebraska artist, Robert Gilder. The painting is titled in pencil on the back "October In Nebraska" and bears names and addresses of possible owners of this painting.
Robert F. Gilder was born in Flushing, N.Y. The son of Reverend Robert Nutt Gilder and Jane Gilder. He grew up in a family of highly successful and noted siblings, John Francis Gilder, concert pianist; William Henry Gilder, noted Arctic explorer; Richard Watson Gilder, writer, poet and editor of Century and Scribner's magazine; and Joseph Gilder, executive of Industrial Finance Corporation in New York City. A sister, Jeanette Gilder was author, editor, and newspaper executive.
Robert Gilder studied art with Hudson River painter, August Will. Gilder settled in Nebraska in 1877 and worked a variety of jobs including archaeologist for the University of Nebraska. Gilder traveled and painted extensively throughout the West and Midwest.
