The photos are mounted to board with an overall measurement of 16" X 20", the photos varying in size from 9" X 7" to 2 3/4" X 4". The photos are in excellent condition, although there is some staining to the board. Although not hand signed, the reverse bears two Flip Schulke's labels and possibly hand titled by Schulke himself, "Fidel Castro, Havana, May 26, 1959. Schulke had apparently put these photos together as an entry to a Photo Journal competition as there is a label for such a competition that Schulke has since covered with one of his own labels.
Schulke's layout of the photos brilliantly documents Castros dynamic rise to power. The chaotic scene of tanks in front of the Havana Hilton The ominous blank faces of troops Castro shown as the benevolent father figure in one photo and as the dismissive dictator in another. The final photo shows the Havana as if time has stood still while a eye-in-the-sky helicopter watches over the city below.
Flip Schulke was a well known freelance photo journalist closely associated with documenting Martin Luther King and the American Civil Rights Movement and famous for his photos documenting Castro's rise to power. Much of his prolific output is held at the Flip Schulke Archive.
