A Superb Sporting Painting of Surf Fishing on the Santa Cruz Coast. The painting is by well listed Pennsylvania / California artist Edward Richie Strawbridge (1903-1999), measures, 12" X 16", with the frame measuring 19" X 23" overall. The painting is oil on canvas-board and is signed, lower right, "Edward Strawbridge", and bears a label on the back giving the title as, "The Surf Fisherman - Santa Cruz", and again names the artist as Edward Strawbridge, with his Belvedere, California address, and dates the painting, 1941. The painting was recently professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition and shows no evidence of in-painting, over-painting, or other restorations.

Edward Strawbridge studied illustration at the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art graduating in 1928. He exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art 1927-1949 and at the Palo Alto (Ca) Art Club in 1933. He won a number of awards for his artwork and illustrations and is listed in many of the important art biographical reference books.

Depicted, is a serene scene of two fisherman rendered in the American Regionalist style reflective of Edward Hopper and other important American realists. The painting would certainly be a fine addition to any collection of American sporting paintings or any collection of West Coast genre painting that focus on the Monterey Bay or especially the Santa Cruz area where such paintings are a rarity from this period.
