Description

Charles Green Shaw (1892-1974)

Oil-canvas collage, signed, lower left and verso

10" X 13"

Price $2100

A wonderful semi-abstract-collage-landscape by the famous American modernist, Charles Green Shaw. The collage consists of old painted canvas fragments glued to a masonite backing with the frame measuring 16" X 19 1/4" overall. The artwork is in excellent condition, however, it must be kept in mind that this piece achieves much of its character and effect by the varying condition of the fragments used by Shaw to make this artwork. There is also a label bearing the title "Cool Dawn, 1956-59"verso.

Artist, poet and minor novelist, Shaw studied Architecture at Columbia University and studied art under Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Students League and then private lessons with George Luks. Shaw quickly became active in the abstract movement and exhibited in important avant-garde shows and became an important figure in American art as an early abstractionist of hard-edge forms, often painted on separate planes of wood and masonite, meticulously joined at the seams that suggested a 3-dimensional quality while maintaining the integrity of the plane. His works were highly influenced by Jean Arp and known for their clarity of form and almost architectural construction. In his later life, Shaw transitioned from hard-edge abstraction to semi-abstraction as reflected in this example and later to full on abstract expressionism.
